Fish, Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation

The Fish, Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Team's vision is "Restore and maintain an environment in the Red River Basin that provides for quality human life, prosperous agriculture, flourishing communities, improved water quality, abundant wildlife and healthy habitats, holistic water management, and increased outdoor recreation all which supports compatible long term economic growth and overall basin environmental health."

The team's report includes an inventory of the land use in the Red River Basin, baseline conditions as they relate to fish and wildlife, a discussion on resource  values, and any future inventory needs. A web site has been set up that includes all relevant information, plans, reports and research on natural resources in the Red River Basin. The Team also attempted to articulate the various issues and challenges facing fish and wildlife resources in the Red River Basin and identify opportunities to increase fish and wildlife resources and improve and expand recreational opportunities.

There  have been several categories of goals established. They include habitat goals, wildlife goals, and societal goals. The habitat goals  address riparian habitats, wetland and lake resources, prairie/grassland  communities, woodland resources, and unique plant communities. The wildlife goals include endangered and threatened species, fisheries, migratory and resident birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Finally, the  societal goals identify recreational systems including trail systems, hunting, fishing, trapping, wildlife watching, environmental education, interpretation, photography, and camping. The opportunities for the development of a recreation and tourism industry, public education and awareness of the fish and wildlife resources of the Red River Basin are also discussed.
