One Basin, One Governance

obog.avif

One Basin, One Governance is an initiative to amplify Indigenous voices in Red River Basin water stewardship. The initiative included a two-day conference highlighting the importance of Indigenous participation in water projects and governance, featuring presentations from leaders across the Lake Winnipeg Basin and a banquet celebrating the Southern Chiefs Organization's 20th anniversary. It continues to keep the RRBC committed to working with our Indigenous partners and carrying on these conversations.

Indigenous Communities in the
Lake Winnipeg Basin

image.png

The Lake Winnipeg Basin spans Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, Alberta, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota. Over the last few decades, Lake Winnipeg and surrounding waters have seen invasive and harmful species such as blue-green algae and zebra mussels negatively impact water quality, which threatens the livelihoods of those who depend on it. Indigenous Peoples have inhabited the area for thousands of years, and are vital voices for making progress on restoring the basin and its water quality.

After a very successful and first-of-its-kind conference,

we continue carrying the conversation started by
"One Basin One Governance".

The success of these conversations, with listening and adding more voices to the building of a new water governance model that includes our First Nation and Metis governments, were the foundation of our Final Report.

It is our hope, that our future leaders would embrace a new model of water governance, where decisions are made with one united voice!
